Running out of gas: what happens and how to fix it
Running out of gas means your wallet no longer has enough native coin to pay for a transaction. Your funds are safe, but they cannot move until gas arrives.
The errors you will see
Common messages include insufficient funds for gas, insufficient TRX or energy, not enough SOL, and simply a transaction that will not submit.
On EVM networks a transaction can also fail on-chain after running out of gas mid-execution. The attempt still costs the fee that was used, and nothing else changes.
What to do
Confirm which network the tokens are on, then get a small amount of that network's native coin into the same address.
Once it arrives, retry the transfer. Nothing about your tokens needs repairing - only the fee balance was missing.
How to avoid it next time
Leave a small gas reserve behind whenever you empty a wallet, and keep a separate reserve on each network you use.
Before a busy period or a large transfer, top up a little more than the minimum.
Common questions
Are my tokens lost if I have no gas?
No. They stay in your wallet and become spendable again as soon as the wallet has native coin for fees.
Why did my transaction fail and still cost a fee?
The network already did the work up to the point of failure, and that work is paid for. Failed contract calls therefore still consume gas.
