Why blockchain transactions need gas

Gas exists because a blockchain is a shared computer that anyone can ask to do work. Charging for that work keeps it honest, funded and usable.

It pays the people running the network

Validators run hardware and stake capital to process transactions and keep history consistent. Fees, along with block rewards, are what make that worthwhile.

It stops spam

If transactions were free, anyone could flood the network with meaningless work and make it unusable for everyone else. A price per unit of work makes that expensive.

It prices scarce block space

Only so much can fit in each block. Fees decide the order when demand exceeds space, which is why urgent transactions pay more.

It also puts a limit on runaway smart-contract execution, because work that never ends would eventually run out of gas.

Common questions

Will fees ever disappear?

Fees are part of how public blockchains stay secure and spam-resistant. Cheaper networks and layer-2s reduce them, but they do not remove them.

Does Nuyis Gas set the network fee?

No. The network sets its own fee. Nuyis Gas sells you the native coin you need to pay it, at a price shown before you order.
